Emeka Nwokolo

Emeka Nwokolo, a rising star in the boxing world, has made a significant mark on the sport as a Nigerian athlete thriving in the diaspora. Born in Benin City, Edo State, Emeka initially showcased his athletic prowess in football during his high school years. However, an ankle injury in 2020 led him to pivot to boxing, where his natural talent and inherited skills from his champion father, Charles Nwokolo, quickly shone through.

Emeka’s journey in professional boxing began in August 2021, and he has since achieved an impressive record of 13 wins, with 11 of those victories coming by knockout and only one loss. Competing in the super-welterweight division, Emeka holds three significant titles: the WBF, ABF, and UBO belts.

Recently, he added two more titles to his name after defeating Colombia’s Jeovanis Barraza in June, securing the WBA North American Boxing Association super welterweight and Universal Boxing Organisation world super welterweight belts. The judges’ scores of 120-108, 120-108, and 118-110 underscored his dominance and skill in the ring.

His success is deeply rooted in the legacy of his father, Charles Nwokolo, also known as “Young Dick Tiger.” Charles made a name for himself in the boxing world by winning a gold medal at the 1983 Commonwealth Games and earning the title of Best Boxer of the tournament. Although he didn’t claim a medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, he turned professional in 1986 and became both the African Champion and Commonwealth Champion that same year.

Emeka’s ambition extends beyond personal achievements. He aims to promote boxing and uplift the youth of Nigeria by providing an alternative to gang life, inspiring discipline, positivity, and determination. During his visit to Nigeria this month, Emeka expressed his desire to fight in Nigeria in 2025. He also donated gloves and other boxing equipment to aspiring boxers at the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control office in the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos State.

Emeka Nwokolo’s dedication and success serve as an inspiration to many, proving that with determination and hard work, great heights can be achieved. His journey not only continues his father’s legacy but also paves the way for future generations of Nigerian athletes in the diaspora.
