Taiwo’s journey began in Nigeria with stunts at Gabros International and Lobi Stars, before attracting attention from European clubs. In 2005, he made the leap to France, joining Olympique Marseille. It was in Marseille that Taiwo truly made a name for himself. During his time at the club, he became one of the top defenders in Ligue 1, winning several titles including Ligue 1, the Coupe de la Ligue, and the Trophée des Champions. His performances in Europe earned him a move to AC Milan in Italy, although his time in Serie A was less successful compared to his Marseille days.
Despite his decline after leaving Milan, he had a thriving career, playing for clubs across various countries including England, Ukraine, Turkey, Finland, and Sweden before concluding his playing days at Finnish club SalPa in 2022.
International Glory with Nigeria
Taiwo was a key figure for Nigeria at the international level. His big break came in 2005 when he was called up to the Nigeria U20 team for the FIFA World Youth Championship. He made an immediate impact, helping Nigeria keep a clean sheet against Brazil in the tournament. His strong defensive performances guided Nigeria to the knockout stages, and the team went on to reach the final, finishing as runners-up.
Also, in 2006, Taiwo was called up to Nigeria’s senior squad for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and once again, he did what he knows how to do best. He scored the team’s first goal of the tournament in a 1-0 victory against Ghana. Although, Nigeria came in third position, Taiwo played a vital role throughout the tournament.
Taiwo continued to represent Nigeria in subsequent AFCON tournaments, World Cup qualifiers, and other prestigious events. His goal-scoring ability from left-back made him a fan favorite.
Life After Football
After being released from SalPa in June 2022, Taiwo has been largely out of the public eye. Although he has not officially announced his retirement, it is widely speculated that the 39-year-old has hung up his boots after a long and successful career.
Taiwo’s impact, however, goes beyond the football field. He is celebrated as one of Nigeria’s greatest football experts and has inspired many young footballers across Africa.
Net Worth and Legacy
It is a fact that playing football is lucrative. Throughout his career, Taye Taiwo accumulated significant wealth. His time at Olympique Marseille, AC Milan, and other European clubs, combined with endorsement deals, has led to an estimated net worth of around $5 million. While not one to flaunt his riches, Taiwo is believed to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle, living quietly away from the stress of professional sports.
As we celebrate Taye Taiwo, we honor his contributions not only to Nigerian football but to the sport on a global scale.
As for whether he has retired or not, that’s a tale only he can tell.
