Early Life: A Journey from Nigeria to the United States
Alex Okosi was born and raised in Enugu, Nigeria where he started his educational journey until the age of 12. He travelled to the United States to visit his brothers and what began as a family visit became a defining moment in his life—Okosi decided to remain in the U.S. to complete his education.
His academic pursuits took him across various states, including New York, Missouri, Nebraska, and Florida, culminating his enrolment at the prestigious Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. He later earned a double major in Business Administration and Economics at Saint Michael’s College in Vermont, graduating Magna cum laude in 1998.
Breaking Ground at MTV Networks
Alex Okosi’s career began with MTV Networks in New York, where he worked on integrated marketing campaigns for iconic franchises like the MTV Video Music Awards and Spring Break. By 2000, he had transitioned to Affiliate Sales and Marketing in Los Angeles, securing distribution deals for major channels like MTV, VH1, and Nickelodeon. His stellar performance caught the attention of the company’s global leadership, paving the way for bigger opportunities.
In 2003, he joined MTV International in London to drive the network’s global expansion. There, he developed a ground-breaking business plan to launch MTV in Africa—a venture that would become one of his most significant contributions to the continent.
Revolutionising African Entertainment
On February 22, 2005, Alex Okosi made history with the launch of MTV Base Africa, the network’s 100th channel worldwide. This platform became a vital space for showcasing African music, culture, and creativity, elevating local talent to international prominence. It also adequately catered to the tastes and attitudes of African youth.
As Senior Vice-President & Managing Director of Viacom International Media Networks Africa, Okosi expanded the network’s reach with channels like Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, NickToons, and BET. He spearheaded iconic initiatives such as the MTV Africa Music Awards, MTV Shuga, and BET Experience Africa, which not only entertained audiences but also addressed pressing social issues like HIV awareness and youth empowerment.
Recognitions and Global Influence
Okosi’s contribution did not go unnoticed. In 2013, he was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, and in 2018, he was a finalist for the All Africa Business Leader Awards. He has also received accolades from the Nigerian Institute of Marketing of Nigeria (NIMN) in 2019 and been featured in global media outlets such as BBC, CNN, and Forbes.
In 2022 and 2023, Okosi was selected for UK Powerlist—a list that celebrates the top 100 of the UK’s most influential people of African, African Caribbean, and African American heritage across a range of industries for their incredible impact. He was in the company of Apple’s Ije Nwokorie, Anne-Marie Imafidon; CEO & Co-Founder, STEMettes, Nneka Abulokwe; founder and CEO, MicroMax consulting amongst other influential people of African descent on the list.
Leading YouTube’s Expansion in Emerging Markets
In 2020, Okosi joined YouTube as Managing Director of EMEA Emerging Markets. During his tenure, he championed African content creators, launched initiatives like the $100M Black Voice Fund, and introduced features like YouTube Shorts and YouTube Kids to new markets. He also played a role in the growth and expansion of the YouTube brand in Africa, the Middle East and Turkey, and continued to champion content creators and emerging voices from across the African continent.
Alex Okosi partnered with Idris Elba to launch the annual Africa Day Benefit Concert. His leadership further solidified YouTube’s role as a platform for amplifying diverse voices from the continent of Africa.
