On August 27, 2020, Dr. Adesina made history by being re-elected as President of the AfDB for a second five-year term. Unanimously endorsed by all African and non-African member countries, he became the first leader in the Bank’s history to secure 100% of the votes. His re-election underscored global confidence in his vision and leadership.

One of Dr. Adesina’s standout accomplishments during his second term was the AfDB’s swift and robust response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Under his direction, the Bank launched a $10 billion Crisis Response Facility to support African countries and issued a $3 billion Fight-COVID-19 social bond, the largest U.S. dollar-denominated social bond in global history. These efforts provided critical resources to mitigate the pandemic’s socioeconomic impact across the continent.

In 2021, the Bank was ranked by Publish What You Fund as the 4th most transparent institution in the world. Additionally, the African Development Fund (ADF), the AfDB Group’s concessional lending arm, earned the distinction of being the 2nd best-performing multilateral and bilateral lending institution globally. That same year, Global Finance magazine named the AfDB the Best Multilateral Financial Institution in the world.
