Transforming Agriculture: Revolutionizing Africa’s Food Systems

Dr. Akinwumi Adesina’ s legacy as Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (2011-2015) is marked by groundbreaking reforms that reshaped the agricultural landscape. Recognizing the need to eliminate corruption and inefficiencies, he introduced the innovative electronic wallet system, a game-changing initiative that directly delivered subsidized farm inputs to farmers via mobile phones. Within four years of its launch, the system reached over 15 million farmers, drastically improving their access to fertilizers and seeds while enhancing productivity. Today, this transformative solution has been adopted in Afghanistan and several African countries, showcasing its global impact.

His achievements in agriculture earned him widespread recognition. In 2013, Forbes named Dr. Adesina African Man of the Year for his role in ending decades of corruption in Nigeria’s fertilizer sector and driving substantial growth in agricultural productivity. Under his leadership, agriculture in Nigeria transitioned from subsistence farming to a lucrative business, attracting $5.6 billion in private sector investments. His policies also spurred the engagement of youth and small and medium Enterprises (SMEs) in agriculture, contributing to an additional 21 million metric tons of food production during his tenure.

Beyond Nigeria, Dr. Adesina’s influence extended to the global stage. In 2010, the then-United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon appointed him as one of 17 global leaders tasked with spearheading the Millennium Development Goals. His contributions to agriculture and development earned him the 2010 Borlaug CAST Communication Award from the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology, an honor named after Norman Borlaug, the father of the Green Revolution and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

Dr. Akinwumi Adesina’s ascent continued in 2015 when he was elected as the 8th President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) by the Bank’s Board of Governors during its Annual Meetings held in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire. Assuming office in on September, 1, 2015, he introduced the High 5s initiative—a visionary strategy aimed at transforming Africa. The High 5s focus on five critical areas:  Light Up and Power Africa, Feed Africa, Integrate Africa, Industrialize Africa, and Improve the Quality of Life for Africans. This ambitious agenda has already impacted the lives of 335 million people across the continent, underscoring its effectiveness.

In September 2016, his expertise was further recognized when Ban Ki-moon appointed him as a member of the Lead Group of the Scaling Up Nutrition Movement. The following year, Dr. Adesina was honored with the prestigious World Food Prize, solidifying his reputation as a champion of food security and sustainable development.

His tenure at the AfDB has also been defined by his efforts to attract global investment into Africa. In 2018, he launched the Africa Investment Forum (AIF), which quickly became the continent’s premier investment marketplace. By 2019, the AIF had mobilized $ 38.1 billion and $40 billion of investment interests in consecutive years, accelerating Africa’s development agenda.

Under Dr. Akinwumi Adesina’s leadership, the AfDB achieved its largest-ever capital increase in October 2019, when shareholders from 80 member countries raised the institution’s general capital from $93 billion to a historic $208 billion. Dr. Adesina also demonstrated bold leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic, launching a $3 billion social bond on April 3, 2020, followed by a $10 billion Crisis Response Facility to support African nations through the crisis.
