Micah Awe, a Nigeria-born linebacker who is pulling weight in the Canadian Football League (CFL), is one such star. With an illustrious career, Awe is a proud ambassador of Nigeria’s sporting excellence.

A Journey Rooted in Nigerian Pride

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Awe moved to the United States at the age of three, growing up in a family that valued both education and discipline. His mother earned a master’s degree from Texas Tech University, while his father graduated with a master’s in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Texas at Arlington. These strong family values played a significant role in shaping Awe’s work ethic and traits that later defined his football career.

A Stellar Collegiate Career

Micah Awe’s journey to professional football began at Texas Tech University, where he made a name for himself as a standout linebacker. Playing 51 games for the Texas Tech Red Raiders, he accumulated an impressive 237 total tackles, with 159 being solo efforts. In his senior year, he led the team with 126 tackles and served as a defensive captain. His leadership and outstanding performance earned him honorable mention All-Big 12 honors, setting the stage for his professional career.

Awe’s CFL Journey and Rise to Stardom

Awe’s journey to the CFL began in 2017 when he signed with the British Columbia (BC) Lions. Despite going undrafted in the National Football League (NFL), Awe’s determination and talent was visible as he quickly became a valuable asset to the Lions. In his rookie season, he recorded 54 defensive tackles and 16 special teams tackles, showcasing his versatility and skill.

After brief stints with the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFL, Awe returned to the CFL and continued to build his reputation as a formidable linebacker. Over the years, he played with multiple teams, including the Toronto Argonauts, Ottawa Redblacks, and Calgary Stampeders.

In 2023, Awe reached new heights with the Calgary Stampeders. He earned CFL and West Division All-Star accolades while achieving career-highs in defensive tackles (134), interceptions (three), sacks (two), and a forced fumble. His record-breaking performance increased his status as one of the league’s premier defensive players.

Returning Home to the BC Lions

On Tuesday, February 11th, the BC Lions announced Awe’s return to the team on a two-year contract. This marks Awe’s fourth stint with the Lions. With his stellar 2023 season fresh in memory, Awe is poised to be a key contributor to the Lions’ defense as they aim for CFL glory.

Beyond his on-field achievements, Micah Awe proudly represents Nigeria on the international sports stage. His roots remain a core part of his identity, and he serves as an inspiration for young Nigerians aspiring to excel in sports.
