Anthony Oluwafemi Olaseni Joshua, a British-Nigerian born on October 15, 1989, in Watford, Hertfordshire, England, has solidified his place as a boxing legend. Currently a two-time Unified Heavyweight World Champion, Joshua holds three of the four main world championships and continues to make Nigeria proud with his remarkable achievements.

Joshua’s parents, Yeta and Robert Joshua briefly moved to Nigeria during his childhood before returning to the UK following their divorce when he was 12. Excelling in both football and track, Joshua clocked an impressive 11.66 seconds in the 100-meter sprint during his ninth year.

At 18, Joshua discovered his passion for boxing and joined Finchley ABC in Barnet, the same club as fellow heavyweight and friend, Derek Chisora. His early successes included winning the Haringey Box Cup in 2009 and 2010, as well as the A.B.A. Championship in 2010.

Representing England at the 2011 AIBA World Boxing Championships as an amateur in the super-heavyweight division, Joshua earned a silver medal. He went on to win the gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics for Great Britain, establishing himself as a formidable force in the sport.

Joshua turned professional in 2013, winning his debut by T.K.O. against Emanuele Leo. His dedication and prowess earned him an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2013 Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for his services to Boxing. Joshua’s rise continued with victories over Denis Bakjtov for the W.B.C. International heavyweight title in 2014. He was then named Prospect of the Year by The Ring magazine. In 2015, he defeated Gary Cornish and Dillian Whyte to win the British and Commonwealth heavyweight belts.

In April, 2016, Joshua claimed his first world title with a knockout win over Charles Martin. He was recognized in Africa as he won The Future Awards Africa prize in sports in 2017. His reign in boxing included defeating top fighters such as Wladimir Klitschko, Carlos Takam, Charles Martin, Dominic Breazeale, Eric Molina, Joseph Parker, and Alexander Povetkin between 2016 and 2018. He defeated Martin, Klitschko, and Parker to win the I.B.F. heavyweight title, the W.B.A. and I.B.O. heavyweight crowns, and the I.B.O. heavyweight title. For his contributions to sports, he was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in 2018.

Despite a setback in 2019 when he lost to Andy Ruiz Jr., Joshua bounced back with a decisive victory in their rematch months later in Saudi Arabia. His success continued as he defended his titles against Kubrat Pulev in 2020. Forbes listed him among the Highest Paid Athletes, with his net worth estimated around $100million.

Joshua faced challenges in 2021 and 2022, losing to former undisputed cruiserweight champion, Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk, but demonstrated resilience by earning significant victories in 2023. He knocked out Robert Helenius and in March 2024, he defeated former UFC Heavyweight Champion, Francis Ngannou in Saudi Arabia. He knocked down Ngannou in the first round, and won by second-round knockout.

Beyond the boxing ring, Joshua is also a competitive chess player, a skill introduced to him by former undisputed heavyweight champion and fellow Englishman, Lennox Lewis. He likens chess to boxing, emphasizing the strategic foresight required in both sports. He says, “Boxing is like taking one of your opponent’s pieces and then counter-attacking. You need to be two moves ahead all the time.”

Anthony Joshua’s journey from a young boy in Nigeria to a global boxing icon is a testament to his dedication, talent, and resilience. His achievements continue to inspire many, particularly in Nigeria, as he proudly represents his heritage on the world stage.
