Chiedozie Ogbene: Nigerian Star Inspiring International Footballers

By Kenny

Chiedozie Ogbene, a Nigerian professional footballer, is making waves on the international scene, inspiring other footballers with his journey from Lagos to the Premier League.  Born in Lagos State in May 1997 to a family of medical professionals, Ogbene’s life took an unexpected turn when his family migrated to Ireland in 2005.

Growing up in the Grange area of Cork, Ogbene attended Bunscoil Chriost Ri. Unlike many of his peers in Nigeria, he had no initial interest in football as he thought he would follow his family’s medical line. His passion for the sport ignited only after moving to Ireland, where he started playing football with his neighbours on the streets. Despite a budding interest in professional football, he initially felt he would excel in Gaelic football, a popular sport in Ireland.

He joined Nemo Rangers for Gaelic football and also played soccer for Tramore Athletic. His professional soccer career began in 2015 with Cork City in Ireland, where he won the Enda McGuill Cup with their under-19 youth team and the FAI Cup with the senior team in 2016. In 2017, Chiedozie moved to Limerick, earning three nominations for the League of Ireland Player of the Month.

His talent soon caught the attention of clubs in England. In 2017, Ogbene signed a three-year deal with Brentford in the Championship. However, the transition to English football was challenging, leading to a loan move to Exeter City in 2018-19 season. He returned to Brentford in January 2019, but at the end of the season, he returned to Rotherham United in August 2019.

During his four seasons with Rotherham United, Ogbene made 136 appearances, contributing to 36 goals, achieving two promotions to the Championship and wining the Papa John’s Trophy. His impressive performance made him the first African-born player to represent the Republic of Ireland in June 2021. In the 2021/22 campaign, he was recognized as one of the EFL’s best wing-backs known for his skill and speed, which added a dynamic edge to Rotherham United’s attack.

Eligible to represent both the Republic of Ireland and Nigeria at the international level, Ogbene has expressed his desire to be a role model to other Irish players from similar backgrounds. He scored his first international goal on October 9, 2021, in a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan, with a 90th-minute header securing a 3-0 win at Baku Olympic Stadium.

In July 2023, Ogbene signed for Luton Town, becoming the club’s first addition for their debut Premier League season. His impact was immediate, scoring nine goals and assisting four times in the 2022/23 season, helping Rotherham United finish in the Championship. In the completed 2023/24 Premier League matches, Ogbene’s top seed of just under 37km/h against Fulham in September remains the fastest a player has run in the Premier League in the season.

Chiedozie Ogbene’s journey to the Premier League is an inspiration for many young footballers worldwide, revealing the power of perseverance and passion in achieving one’s dreams. For more on his inspiring journey and achievements, check here
