Gregory Ojakpe Shines in Fashion with ‘Biomorphic Surrealism’ Collection

By Kenny

Gregory Ojakpe, a fashion designer originally from Nigeria and raised in South London, has made a significant impact in the fashion world with his graduate collection showcased at Central Saint Martin’s in 2021. The collection, titled “Biomorphic Surrealism,” earned him a prestigious Sarabande Foundation Scholarship.

Ojakpe’s passion for fashion began at the young age of six, inspired by Henri Matisse’s renowned artwork, The Snail. Reflecting on his early fascination, he recalled that he was captivated by the idea of an abstract image and the various interpretations that he and his classmates gave to the random shapes, lines, and textures his teacher showed to them.

Over the years, Ojakpe has refined his skills in intricate knitwear and textiles, developing innovative techniques that culminated in his standout graduate collection. The collection featured sculptural and woven cords crafted into elastometric fabrics, creating unique silhouettes. He got the inspiration for the collection from fine art, sculpture, and his childhood interests. Ojakpe also emphasized that his creative vision centers around four key elements: fantasy, craftsmanship, identity, and surrealism.

He specializes in three-dimensional knitwear and has long been intrigued by automatism. As a child, he began to recreate artworks using various mark-making techniques, allowing the marks to guide the image’s formation. At that time, he was just experimenting, but he now views those works as the beginning of his relationship with the concept of true automatism. With this, he has been able to manipulate the forms of his garments, creating extraordinary pieces through the folding, pinning, and draping of knitted fabrics.

Today, Ojakpe imparts his knowledge of fashion design through knitting. He recently instructed participants at the YKWU Knitting Club on how to use rope to add structure to crochet pieces. This technique results in durable and long-lasting items, ideal for projects that require resilience and can endure significant wear and tear.

Gregory Ojakpe’s unique blend of artistry and technical skill continues to establish him as a rising star in the fashion industry, showcasing the depth and versatility of his talent. His dresses have been worn by chart-topping stars such as Lizzo and Leigh Anne.
