Mufutau Yusuf Mufutau Yusuf, the Choreographic Mastermind Behind ‘Impasse’ is a Nigerian-born Irish dancer and choreographer, has been making waves in the contemporary dance scene with his powerful and thought-provoking works. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Yusuf moved to Ireland at the age of 9 and began his dance training at 12. He went on to study dance in Austria for four years and graduated from the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance in 2016.

Yusuf’s professional debut was with the Irish Modern Dance Theatre in 2014. Since then, he has worked with various companies and choreographers, including Wim Vandekeybus/Ultima Vez and Liz Roche Company. In 2022, he premiered his first full-length choreographic work, Òwe, meaning parable in Yoruba.

The creative’s latest work, Impasse, is a highly anticipated solo piece that explores themes of identity, community, and humanity. However, according to the Dublin Dance Festival website, “Impasse goes beyond mere exploration of our sense of self and community. It reclaims our humanity and celebrates the autonomy and self-determination of Black bodies.” Impasse will be performed at the Project Arts Centre, Dublin, on May 24-25 as part of the Dublin Dance Festival.

Interestingly, Yusuf has received numerous awards and recognition, including the Irish Arts Council Dance Bursary award in 2020 and the Project Award in 2022. He is currently an associate artist with Liz Roche Company and Solstice Arts Centre.

Yusuf’s work is characterized by its emotional depth, technical precision, and commitment to social justice. Moreso, his unique perspective as a Black artist living in Ireland brings a fresh and important voice to the contemporary dance scene. With Impasse, Yusuf continues to push boundaries and challenge audiences to think critically about identity, community, and humanity.
