A Literary Legacy That Transcends Borders

Funso Aiyejina, a renowned Nigerian-Trinidadian based poet, short story writer, playwright, and academic, left an indelible mark on the literary world. His passing on July 1, 2024, has left a void in the hearts of many, but his remarkable legacy continues to inspire and empower generations.

Early Life and Academic Journey

Born in 1949 in Ososo, Edo State, Nigeria, Funso Aiyejina hailed from the Edo State, proudly debunking the assumption that he was Yoruba. His academic journey took him to prestigious institutions, including:

  • Obafemi Awolowo University), where he earned a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Acadia University in Canada, where he obtained a Master’s degree.
  • University of the West Indies (UWI) in Trinidad, where he earned a Ph.D. and later became a Professor Emeritus.

Literary Achievements

Aiyejina’s literary prowess was undeniable, with his poetry and short stories featured in numerous international journals and anthologies. His notable works include:

  • A Letter to Lynda and Other Poems (1988). This earned him the Association of Nigerian Authors’ Poetry Prize in 1989.
  • The Legend of the Rockhills and Other Stories (1999), which received the Best First Book award.
  • The Journey Within (2003), a poetry collection exploring themes of identity and belonging.
  • Echoes of the Future (2007), a short story collection delving into the complexities of human relationships.

Academic Career and Legacy

As an academic, Funso Aiyejina taught at esteemed institutions, including:

  • Obafemi Awolowo University, where he mentored generations of students.
  • Lincoln University in the USA (as a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence), where he shared his expertise with international students.
  • University of the West Indies. He served as Dean of Humanities and Education here until his retirement in 2014.

The late Professor received numerous honors and recognition for his contributions to literature and academia, including:

  •  Association of Nigerian Authors’ Poetry Prize (1989).
