Shulamite grew up in Nigeria, where she witnessed firsthand the struggles faced by women and girls, including gender-based violence, rape, and female genital mutilation (FGM). These experiences sparked a burning desire in her to make a difference.

In 2009, Shulamite Ezechi moved from Nigeria to Glasgow to study at Glasgow Caledonian University. Yielding to her passion, she left her career in dietetics and human nutrition to establish ANYiSO in 2015. ANYiSO, meaning ‘we belong’ in an Igbo dialect, is a charity dedicated to supporting women and girls who have faced similar struggles. The organization provides a safe space for young people, refugees, asylum seekers, and women who have experienced trauma.

Through ANYiSO, Shulamite has supported over 4000 people, offering guidance, tailored support, and various activities to help newcomers navigate Scottish systems. Her charity’s dedication to empowering ethnic minorities has earned it the prestigious Charity of the Year award.

The courtesy visit from Kate Forbes acknowledges Shulamite’s tireless efforts in fostering a sense of belonging among asylum seekers and refugees in Scotland. This historic event celebrates the strong ties between Nigeria and Scotland, recognizing Shulamite as an example of Nigerian excellence abroad.

Shulamite Ezechi’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have. Her courage, compassion, and dedication to empowering others make her an exemplary representative of Nigeria in Scotland and the world at large.
