A Nigerian man has been shot dead in South Africa following a dispute at a bar in Mamelodi, Pretoria, prompting calls for a thorough and transparent investigation.
NaijasporaNews The deceased, identified as Olatunde Olaleye, a native of Ikere-Ekiti in Ekiti State, was killed on 21 September while working at Spanata Bar and Grills.
The incident was confirmed by the President of the Nigerian Union in South Africa (NUSA), Smart Nwobi, who stated that Mr Olaleye was allegedly shot by a South African national following an argument over whether a drinking glass could be taken outside the establishment.
Mr Nwobi further revealed that reports indicated the suspect later returned to the premises and allegedly threatened the management, warning that members of his crew would return.
The NUSA president has called for a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr Olaleye’s death, urging the authorities to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
”We cannot continue to lose Nigerians under circumstances that leave families devastated and communities traumatised,” Mr Nwobi said.
“We call for a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding Olaleye’s death and for the law to take its proper course.”
He also urged the Nigerian Mission in South Africa, comprising the Consulate-General and the High Commission in Pretoria, to intensify engagement with South African authorities to ensure the matter is properly investigated.
Mr Olaleye is survived by his wife and children.
