ABUJA — The Federal Government has given the green light for the recruitment of 3,252 verified Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) teachers into Federal Unity and Technical Colleges across the country, in a move hailed as a landmark intervention to address staffing shortages and reward decades of dedicated service.
Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, who announced the approval in Abuja on Thursday, said the recruitment would significantly bolster teaching capacity and improve learning outcomes nationwide. The approval, he noted, reflects President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to expanding quality education through sustained investment in qualified teachers.
“The President has approved the recruitment of teachers,” Dr Alausa stated. “Priority will be given to absorbing verified PTA teachers, many of whom have served in our Federal Unity Colleges and Federal Technical Colleges for almost 25 years.” The minister emphasised that the decision acknowledges the invaluable contributions of these educators, who have supported classroom instruction for years without permanent public service appointments.
The recruitment follows a comprehensive verification exercise conducted by an inter-ministerial committee, which meticulously screened eligible PTA teachers before recommending them for regularisation into the federal public service. The exercise successfully verified 3,252 teachers across the cadres of Education Officers, Assistant Education Officers and Technical Instructors.
Dr Alausa described the development as a major milestone under the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He explained that integrating these experienced teachers into the federal workforce would preserve institutional knowledge, strengthen classroom instruction and improve educational standards across the nation’s unity colleges.
“This is a President who cares deeply for Nigeria and for the future of our country,” the minister remarked, underscoring the administration’s resolve to place education at the heart of national development.
The regularisation is expected to improve teacher-student ratios, enhance curriculum delivery and create more stable learning environments for students. It also addresses long-standing concerns from educational stakeholders who have identified teacher shortages as a major challenge confronting Federal Unity Colleges.
Dr Alausa assured all verified PTA teachers that the regularisation exercise would be concluded transparently, fairly and in full compliance with established public service rules. He reiterated that the Ministry of Education would continue collaborating with relevant government agencies to complete all remaining statutory procedures before final recruitment approvals are issued.
“This administration is determined to ensure that every child in our Federal Unity Colleges is taught by qualified, motivated and professionally supported teachers,” the minister said, reaffirming the government’s commitment to restoring confidence in public education.
Observers suggest the move could also improve staff morale and reduce reliance on temporary teaching arrangements, supporting the government’s broader drive for sustainable education reforms.
