A Nigerian drug dealer, Tony Obina, has been recaptured after fleeing from the Kakata Central Prison in Margibi County, Liberia, during a jailbreak on Sunday, 20 September 2026.
Obina was among a number of inmates who escaped from the correctional facility in the prison break, which was later confirmed by Liberia’s Ministry of Justice.
Videos circulating on social media showed Obina and a fellow escapee being escorted back to the prison after they were reportedly spotted by local residents.
In one of the clips, Obina was seen wearing nothing but a pair of blue boxers as he was taken back into custody.
In a statement, the Liberian Ministry of Justice confirmed that several inmates had escaped and said security agencies had launched an operation to recapture them.
The ministry added that the Bureau of Corrections and Rehabilitation was reviewing prison records to establish the exact number and identities of those who fled.
It urged residents to come forward with any information that could help security agencies track down the remaining escapees, while warning the public against attempting to apprehend or harbour them.
Obina was recently convicted by a 12-member jury at the 13th Judicial Circuit Court in Margibi County in a major drug-trafficking case.
He was convicted alongside two officers of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency, Joe Logan and Lovette Flowers.
The case reportedly involved drugs valued at approximately $181,008 and more than 63.2 million Liberian dollars.
Reports indicate that Obina and other escapees were apprehended by community members and security authorities while allegedly attempting to flee following the jailbreak.
The Ministry of Justice said security agencies would provide further updates as efforts to recapture the remaining escapees continue.
